A Very Special Donation

In January and February of 2010 Amigos de los Niños found two very seriously ill babies, Paola, who was just 4 months old, and Jose Antonio 5 months old. Both of them suffered from severe congenital heart malformation which, if not surgically corrected, would not let them live into adolescence.

ADLN immediately started the process to obtain passports and visas for them to be sent to Omaha Children's Hospital and Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon Jim Hammal who would perform these difficult operations. Though networking with sister organization Los Cabos Children's Foundation, we are able to have these life giving opportunities for our children.

Before they could travel to the US, both babies required more than 20 days in Pediatric Intensive Care at the San Jose Amerimed Hospital under the excellent care of Pediatric Intensive Care Specialist Dr. Ramon Barragan; they suffered from pneumonia and breathing difficulties because of their deteriorated condition. Finally, in July, we had the visas and they were ready to travel, Paola needed oxygen during her trip and American Airlines arranged a flawless flight for both families for which all of us are very thankful.

Now, we have a new baby in need of open heart surgery, his name is Daniel and ADLN has gotten their visa appointments for January 7th. So they will be making the trip to Omaha Children's Hospital soon also and, God willing, we will have saved and changed another baby's life.

Amigos de los Niños just held a Cardio Mini Clinic checking on our children who have already received surgery, and two who are waiting to go. Dr. Alejandro Valderrain and Dr. Richard McFaul looked and listened to these little hearts and all the children are doing well, little Jose Antonio has a pacemaker to help his heart keep time.
